I'm starting a new group, a new movement of sorts in 2011 - because I have a new idea. It may not go beyond my front door because I'm sure some of you will think this is lame. But, I think it's pretty important -so here we go!
Like you all - I've been thinking about the New Year - and I was thinking of a scene in "Story of Us" that cracked me up - but it's so true. Let's start there.
In the movie, Ben is thinking of writing a (boring) book - and his friend explains it's a bad idea like this:
Let me explain something to you – not as your agent, this is as your friend. You see all these people out here, huh? You see they’re getting in buildings, they’re driving in cars, they’re crossing the street there, and they’re walking around. Every single one of these people is going to die some day – and they all know it.
Which is why they tend to regard the time they have on this planet as precious. Now, there are a lot of things that take up a lot of that time – even if they don’t enjoy it. They have to go to work, they have to get dressed, they have to wait in lines, they have to clean yards, they gotta get batteries, they have to visit the eye doctors. They’re doing all things.
Now, add that to the time they spend sleeping and eating and washing up and voting and buying gifts for people they don’t even like and you can see why they’re so CHOOSEY about how they spend whatever leisure time they do have.
This reminds me - life is short and I want to be really choosey about how I spend my leisure time!
(MUF's I haven't started in a basket)
So this year, I refuse - REFUSE - to allow "guilt" and it's evil twin "pressure" to enter my sewing room simply because I have a lot of UFO's.
In fact - I don't like the term UFO's (unfinished objects). I prefer my new term - MUF's "Masterpieces Under Fermentation"! Quilts are like fine wine - they simply cannot be rushed girls! I have many that are in the fermentation process right now - and at just the perfect time - without any pressure or guilt - I'll stitch them up with joy!
(more MUF's in various stages in another basket)
In years past, I've tried to force myself to get those UFO's (oops MUF's) done - in lots of different ways (can't start a new project until I finish an old one . . .). And then my sewing becomes pressured, goal oriented, all about getting it done as efficiently as possible. I don't leave my sewing room refreshed - but usually frustrated that I didn't get more done!
(you got it - more MUF's - this time in tubs)
I started quilting because playing with fabric, stitching and designing quilts brought me comfort, and joy. It made me happy - and left me feeling more loving, peaceful and warm! It was a way to take time to enjoy life's simple pleasures - and I left my sewing room as a sweeter, calmer, happier wife and mom!
So this year - that's my hope, my plan (not just with sewing BTW)! And, if I don't finish a single MUF this year - even if I start a dozen new MUF's - well it's all good!
(fabric & books to start New MUF's)
They're just fermenting in my heart and mind - waiting to become that perfect gift or that perfect touch of home decor!!! I'll finish them some day - or I'll find them a good home - who knows, could be at your house (smile)!
Okay Girls - are there any of you out there who want to join me in this New Challenge
and become a MUF's Girl? I'm hoping there are at least a couple who will display this button with honor - and join me in a year of sewing for the sheer joy of it - sewing what you really want to sew, when you want to sew it, pressure free, guilt free - and loving every minute of it!
I'm thinking we Charming Girls should all get extra entries - just for sewing what we really wanted to sew - and taking joy in it! Okay - so is this lame - or are you all feeling a little MUF - ee?
TTFN,
Kelly
