Yes - you read it right! Not Confessions of a Shopaholic - but of a Workaholic! No time to shop
(except for fabric) when you're busy working!
Yes - I confess it - I'm a workaholic! And, if I could just say - I come by it honestly! Hard work, accomplishment, success - all of these things are HIGHLY valued in my family! In fact, Studly was baffled after my grandpa's funeral - that the eulogy focused on what a hard worker my grandpa was - the he never missed a day of work, etc . . . .!!! I didn't find it strange at all - well until he said something!
And, so I'd best describe the pace of my life as MACH II. A few of Studly's favorite things to remind me that I'm going at life too hard are:
"Hey, Hey - Where's The Fire?" and
"Slow Down You Over-Achiever!"
But, truthfully girls - I struggle to "take it easy" because I'm a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a quilt shop owner, a quilt pattern designer, a blogger, a blog club runner, an e-mailer, the house cleaner, the laundry doer, the meal planner and a hobby quilter when I can squeeze it in . . . and I want to be the very best at all of these things that I can be -- CAN YOU SAY PRESSURE - CAN YOU RELATE??
Pressure leads to multi-tasking - working nights, weekends and holidays! Exhibit A - someone will be talking about a movie - and I say "Oh, I'd like to see that - that sounds good", and Studly says - "you saw that - you watched that." And I say, "I did - did I like it?" (and we both just laugh)!
- See I was probably e-mailing you fine girls, or doing computer work for the shop, or running back and forth to the sewing machine while the movie was playing.
I had a bit of trouble choosing my word - and reading all of your words just made it tougher, because they're all so great!
But, Miss Polly of Aunt Polly's Porch was right - my word chose me - and it is
When I say rest - I don't mean a good night of sleep (though that is good)! By rest I mean a calmness of spirit, a peacefulness soul that pervades all that I say and do! I mean the ability to just BE without accomplishing or doing anything - on occasion, at least.
Rest is defined as:
1. Cessation of work, exertion, or activity.
2. Peace, ease, or refreshment resulting from sleep or the cessation of an activity.
3. Sleep or quiet relaxation.
4. The repose of death: eternal rest.
5. Relief or freedom from disquiet or disturbance.
6. Mental or emotional tranquillity.
7. Termination or absence of motion.
I'm looking to cultivate all of these in my life - well- except #4 (at least not yet anyway)!
I was pretty sure rest was my word - then my MIL e-mailed me this poem today - written by a teenager with terminal cancer:
P.S. Photos of "Flower Sugar II" fabric by Lecien, and Country Threads Mags (love those Aussie quilters) that I got today.
P.S.S. I promise I'm getting to your e-mails! I'm getting to about several a day - and have about several left - but, in the Spirit of REST (and it being 8 p.m.) - I'm snuggling up with my Studly, watching a movie and stitchin' this cute little guy
